Art Videos (Emotions/Expressing emotions)

Miss Parker had us watching some art videos so we could see the different shots and lighting coordination's of an art video. Bill Viola was the artist/director of all the art videos we watched. The art videos in my opinion were quite intense and loud. They were unusual but very interesting . For homework we then had to watch some more of his videos. I thought the art videos were an interesting topic that I learnt alot from which I didn't already know. These two videos below were the videos I liked the most and I believe will inspire my work.

Technical camera skills (Development of photography)

We learn't about the different parts in a camera :

Lens - It draws the light into the camera and focuses it on the film plane.

Shutter - It open and closes to control the length of time light strikes the film. There are two types of shutters: a leaf shutter, located between or just behind the lens elements, and a focal plane shutter, located in front of the film plane.

Shutter Release - The button that releases or "trips" the shutter mechanism.

Aperture - It dilates and contracts to control the diameter of the hole that the light passes though, to let in more or less light. It is controlled by the f-stop ring.

Viewfinder - The "window" through which you look to frame your picture.

Self-Timer - This mechanism trips the shutter after a short delay - usually 7 to 10 seconds - allowing everyone to be in the photograph.

Iso - film speed.

Photographs taken to test camera functions

We were told to take photographs to test the different types of ISO in a camera :

Photographs taken

In this lesson we were sent out to take pictures , using our current photography skills , we were asked to take pictures and start thinking of a possible theme for our projects .. so picked NATURE !

These are the images I took :

Styles of Photography

Miss Parker is a professional photographer who came to teach us at chestnut grove school for about 4-5 weeks, on our first lesson with her we learnt about different styles of photography including artistic/creative , fashion and photo journalism photography.

What the different styles of photography mean ?

. Artistic/creative photography is when we can't identify the person within the photograph.

. Fashion photography is when the whole image is highly controlled, the posture, clothes and lighting are clearly picked out and made to perfection.

. Photojournalism (paparazzi)  is a type if image you would find in a serious newspaper article, it can be a shot of a serious event e.g. children running away from soldiers covered in mud and blood.

There are also many other different styles of photography which fall under these 3 categories such as :

Portraiture , which is when you get a picture of a person from the waist up or full body , but it is an image mainly concentrated on the person within the shot.

Travel and landscape (scenic) photography is when you capture an image based on the place/landscape for things such as travel leaflets (to persuade people to go somewhere).

Wedding and special occasions photography , which uses a whole variety of different shots, is a huge business and people in the shots are just randomly posing .

Still life photography is used for product advertisements such as e.g. jewellery or food.
